Woodlands Texas Real Estate Info, Demographics, School Info & More

The WoodlandsThe Woodlands - also called The Woodlands Township - is a large, master-planned community covering about 24 square miles of heavily wooded land with rolling hills in Montgomery and Harris counties. As of 2006, the population of The Woodlands was 55,649 and the community was continuing to grow. The Woodlands is considered part of the Houston-Sugar Land - Baytown metropolitan area.

History of Woodlands Houston

The Woodlands community was founded in 1974 by George P. Mitchell on the site of a former lumber mill. Around 2005, there was talk of the city of Houston annexing The Woodlands, prompting opponents of the move to attempt to create their own independent government. The Woodlands now contributes sales tax revenues to Houston and the community may gain cityhood through an election in 2014, under an agreement reached with Houston city leaders.

Woodlands Houston - Attractions and Amenities

The Woodlands is home to seven golf courses, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion concert venue, more than 150 fabulous restaurants, the four-star Woodlands Resort, and several shopping malls. There are two movie theaters in the community and the Houston Museum of Natural Science has plans to add a 200,000-square-foot, five-story satellite location in The Woodlands.

Woodlands Houston Texas - Demographics

As of the 2000 United States Census of 2000, there were 19,881 households and 15,546 families residing in The Woodlands area. The population density was 2,328.4 people per square mile.

The racial makeup of The Woodlands area was 92.36% White, 1.75% African American, 0.29% Native American, 2.80% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.43% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race comprised 6.64% of the population.

Just over 47% of The Woodlands households had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.8% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.21.

The age of The Woodlands residents was spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in The Woodlands was $85,253, and the median income for a family was $98,675. Males have a median income of $78,642 versus $38,505 for females. The Per capita income for the CDP was $37,724. About 3.0% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.0% of those under age 18 and 10.6% of those age 65 or over.

Woodlands Houston - Schools

Children in The Woodlands attend schools in the Conroe Independent School District. Also, the Montgomery County Memorial Library System operates two libraries in The Woodlands, including the South Branch and the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library.

The Woodlands High School has two campuses and is the largest high school in Texas, with about 5,000 students on both campuses. The high school ranked among the 1000 Best High Schools in America in 2007, according to Newsweek Magazine.

There are also several private schools serving The Woodlands, including Oak Ridge Christian Academy, The Woodlands Christian Academy, John Cooper School, Esprit International School, The Phoenix Academy. St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School, The Woodlands Academy Preparatory School, Cunae International School, Harvest Waldorf School, and The Sherwood Academy.

Woodlands Houston - Neighborhoods

The Woodlands is organized into "villages," which are further broken up into "neighborhoods" with distinctive atmospheres and styles of their own. The villages of The Woodlands include:

  • Village of Alden Bridge

Located in the northwest corner of The Woodlands, the Village of Alden Bridge is one of the largest villages in The Woodlands. Opened in 1993, this village is filled with parks, hiking trails, bike paths, lush landscapping, convenient shopping centers, and is just minutes to the I-45.

  • Village of Cochran's Crossing

Located near the middle of The Woodlands, the Village of Cochran's Crossing is home to The Woodlands Country Club, is home to The Woodlands High School, and is named for the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Mill and opened in 1983. Residents can find shopping in the Cochran's Crossing Village Center.

  • Village of College Park

Located in the Northeast section of The Woodlands, The Village of College Park is home to Montgomery College, a public two-year community college It includes the Harper's Landing neighborhood and opened in 1995.

  • Village of Creekside Park

The newest village. When built out, it is planned to have 5,516 single-family production homes, 541 senior (55 and over) homes, 738 multi-family residences, and 298 custom homes and Estate Homes in the gated community of Carlton Woods Creekside. Opened in 2007.

  • Village of Grogan's Mill

The Woodlands' first neighborhood, opened in 1974, and located near the Town Center with shopping, entertainment, and dining options. Named for the former Grogan-Cochran Lumber Mill.

  • Village of Indian Springs

Situated on the northern border of Spring Creek. Opened in 1984.

  • Village of Panther Creek

One of the most desired Villages in The Woodlands, the Village of Panther Creek sits on the western shore of Lake Woodlands. It opened in 1976.

  • Village of Sterling Ridge

Home to The Woodlands High School Ninth Grade Campus. The gated community of Carlton Woods, opened in 2000, is located here.

  • The Woodlands Town Center

The community's commercial development. This village includes Market Street, the Waterway District, The Woodlands Mall, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, several hotels, and a convention center.
